The BIG John Gold Testing Kit not only evaluates the Karat and purity of Gold, but it is also a Precious Metal Testing Kit. You can test for Gold, Silver and Platinum.

The 6-In-1 Gold Test Kit consists of 6 bottled solutions and a gold test stone. Four of the solutions are to test the gold Karat: 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, and then there is a solution to test for silver and another to test for platinum.

The Gold Test Kit is ideal for metal detectorists to see if the gold, silver or platinum ring they found is precious or just bling.

HOW TO TEST THE PURITY AND KARAT OF GOLD

1. Make a scratch line with the gold piece to be tested on the gold test stone.
2. Place drops of the different gold test solutions on the line (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k).
3. Wait for one minute.
4. Where the scratch line is still visible, that indicates the Karat value.
5. If the item was made of brass, the scratch line would disappear.

HOW TO TEST FOR PLATINUM

1. Make a scratch line with the platinum piece to be tested on the test stone.
2. Place a drop of the platinum test solution on the line.
3. Wait for one minute.
4. If the scratch line remains visible, that is a positive test for platinum.
5. For other metals, the scratch line will disappear, indicating it is not platinum.

HOW TO TEST FOR SILVER

1. Remove all impurities from the surface of the silver piece to be tested by using a solvent like thinners, etc.
2. Place a drop of the silver testing solution on the item to be tested.
3. If it is silver, the drop will become red. The degree of redness depends on the quality of the silver.
   1. On sterling silver (92.5 p.c. silver) the drop will become light red.
   2. On silver plate (100 p.c. silver) the solution will become darker red.
4. Other metals will not show up as red.
